Nordic Seaplanes is a new Danish airline , which started operations in May 2016 providing a seaplane service between the ports of Denmarks capital Copenhagen and Aarhus. Initial plans for such a rather unusual route came up as early as in 2012 but it was not until late 2014 that things got concrete. Business man and racer Lars Erik Nielsen and Lasse Rungholm initiated the project. Lars Erik Nielsen and two cousins had sold Maldivian Air Taxi in 2013. Maldivian had operated some 45 seaplanes at that time. Nordic Seaplanes started in December 2014 and purchased a 37-year-old DHC-6 Twin Otter 300 aircraft that had been previously operated by the Iranian company „Iranian Naft Airlines“. In April 2015 the Twin Otter was ferried from Dubai to Switzerland , where it underwent a four-month total overhaul. Consequently pontoons were mounted on the plane, so that it could take off and land on water. The plane was finally registered to the Danish Civil Aviation Register as OY-NSA. In February 2016 the original investor Rune Balle phased out of the project so that it was now entirely led by Lars Erik Nielsen and pilot Lasse Rungholm. On 25th May 2016 Nordic Seaplanes took off for the first time from Nordre Toldbod in Copenhagen with paying passengers. It marked the beginning of Denmark's first commercial seaplane service.
