Daks over Normandy

It certainly had been a “once in a lifetime” event for aviation photographers at Duxford aerodrome in June 2019: Marking the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion in Normandy, the airfield hosted the largest assembly of the famous DC-3 / C-47 “Dakota” transport and troop carrier aircraft of the the last 70 years. All in all some 23 Dakotas, representing many different variants like the DC-3, C-47, C53 and the only C-41A ever built flew in to UK’s Imperial War Museum at Duxford to participate in a massive fly-by over the beaches of Normandy on June 5th. 7 of the 23 historic troop carriers joined the event from European bases, the rest had flown in from the US via Canada, Greenland, Iceland and Scotland. The pictures in this feature cover the arrival- and training-days from June 2nd to June 5th, also including a well organized night shooting in the evening hours of Monday, June 3rd.
